Every human being has a human right to an independent life free of violence. Unfortunately, violence within the family or by a partner is no longer an exception. Anybody can be faced with physical and mental violence, regardless of their age, religion or nationality. Domestic violence is defined as any form of physical, sexual or psychological violence in close social relationships.

Forced marriage is one of the possible forms of domestic or intrafamily violence. A marriage is considered “forced” if one or both of the future spouses are coerced into marrying. Forced marriage violates the right to choose a spouse and enter freely into marriage, as well as individual liberty. Forced marriage is a human rights violation.
